Yoga refers to a system of breathing and/or poses that promote mind-body integration and generate balance within those who practice it. The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, meaning “to control”, “to yoke” or “to unite”. Hence yoga is a practice that involves developing a state of unity or ‘coherence’ in which all aspects of one’s self work in harmony, allowing an individual to be so present and undivided that they achieve oneness with the very source of their life.
It is this most important endeavor, that of being united with the peace of infinite understanding, that has yoga practitioners from every tradition create a regular practice that they might gain the ultimate coherence.
Russa Yog
Russa Yog is a form of yoga that uses ropes or “russa” to sustain certain yoga movements. The ropes offer safetey and support while moving into deep poses, yet because they are flexible they offer an unsteady, dynamic element which the yogi must develop strength and focus to overcome and create balance. Additionally, the use of cardiovascular training and isometric contractions allow each student to build strength easily and enhance agility, while using the ropes as protection from overstrain.
Russa Yog is an effective tool for developing one’s mind and body in yog or coherence, and a regular practice of this, coupled with learning the deep and elegant principles taught through many other forms of yoga, can most assuredly foster one’s personal growth upon the path to harmony and oneness.
